I'm not surprised by this, pictures communicate 1,000 times more information than plaintext. And when we're talking about Twitter, we're restricted further 140 words or less--not exactly ideal.
On the other hand I've made Twitter campaigns work for my clients, by focusing on the inherent virality of the medium. So there is a benefit with them if you are a creative marketer who's willing to go through 5 to 10 failures to get any sort of traction from a viral campaign.

Thanks, great post. I have a question though. the potential number of eyeballs on Twitter are much greater than Pinterest. Are your stats taking this into account or is the uplift in revenue based on a like for like traffic comparison?

@James, Pinterest drives more revenue than Twitter in raw numbers as well as on a unit analysis level.
This has to do in part with the different psychology in sharing. Pinterest can be described as "scrapbooking the way you want your life to look", where as Twitter has a much more social and communication-heavy aspect. Pinterest, arguably, isn't a very social social network - it's much more about curation. There are other things that make it more valuable too, like the more valuable TYPE of audience. Twitter may have a larger audience, but the folks with more discretionary spending power are on Pinterest. Of course, we always need to be active on both :)
